rareperception:

People take pictures of the happy moment in their lives. Someone looking through a photo album could conclude we had lead a joyous, leisurely existence. Free of tragedy. No one ever takes a picture of something they want to forget.

—Robin Williams (One Hour Photo)

Such a wonderful, hilarious, soulful actor. Rest in peace, Robin Williams. We’ll miss you.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had this awkward interaction over the years. Thank you Marc Maron, for reminding me it could certainly be worse.

Nevada City and the South Yuba River

Nestled in the green pine-covered hills of the Northern Sierra Nevada is the Gold Rush town of Nevada City. Beautiful Victorian houses line the streets, keeping the old-time charm alive, and a vibrant downtown is home to world-class art, theater and music. The nearby South Yuba River State Park is known for its emerald swimming holes during the summer and radiant leaf colors during autumn. These days the gold panning is more for tourists than prospectors, but the gold miner spirit is still in the air.

On Sunday, during the Farm to Table Banquet, we’re projecting Buster Keaton’s The Cameraman (1928) against the wall above Mekka in Nevada City. Buster Keaton’s first film after signing with MGM, and his last masterpiece, it’s a great little silent with lots of gags. Come by and check it out! The film will be playing from approximately 8 to 9:30pm.

“Down through the years my face has been called a sour puss, a dead pan, a frozen face, The Great Stone Face, and, believe it or not, “a tragic mask.” On the other hand that kindly critic, the late James Agee, described my face as ranking “almost with Lincoln’s as an early American archetype, it was haunting, handsome, almost beautiful.” I can’t imagine what the great rail splitter’s reaction would have been to this, though I sure was pleased.” ― Buster Keaton, My Wonderful World of Slapstick
