“Movies, if they’re very good, aren’t a conversation; they’re an exaltation, a shuddering of one’s being, something deeply personal yet awesomely vast. That’s what criticism exists to capture. And it’s exactly what’s hard to talk about, what’s embarrassingly rhapsodic, what runs the risk of seeming odd, pretentious, or gaseous at a time of exacting intellectual discourse.”
“It was like Wedding Crashers…meets Memento.”

Microreview: Night Moves

Out on DVD this week, Kelly Reichardt’s latest is broken into two parts: the days leading up to an attack on a hydroelectric dam, and the fallout from it. The first part uses every inch of Hitchcockian will-they-won’t-they tension, the latter is pure nervous energy waiting to explode.

The film is perfectly cast; these are people you’ve met (especially if you live in a place like Nevada City), and the actors embody them without a wink or nod to the camera. Reichardt and co-writer Jon Raymond don’t beat us over the head with their vision. Instead they let the characters dictate it themselves, leaving us with a truly tense and subtle film unlike anything else.

Microreviews is an ongoing series on the NCFF Tumblr, written by friends of the festival about what they’ve been watching. This one was written by once and future volunteer Nate Collins. If you’d like to write one, get in touch.

”This farmer, he had a big spread, and a lot of money. Whoever was sitting in a chair when he’d come around, why they’d stand up and give it to him. Wasn’t no harm in him. You’d give him a flower, he’d keep it forever.” -Linda
